World Water Day Campaign 2026

World Water Day 2026

March 22, 2026, marks another World Water Day. This international day is dedicated to water and the importance of good water quality around the world. In the Netherlands, too, more and more initiatives are being organized to encourage people to use water more responsibly.

What is World Water Day?

World Water Day is a United Nations initiative and has been observed annually on March 22 since 1993. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of global water issues and the millions of people who still lack access to safe drinking water.

Each year, a different theme takes center stage. In 2026, it will be:

ā€œWater’s role in gender equality.ā€

The Importance of Water Quality

In many parts of the world, water is severely polluted or scarce. Millions of people still lack access to safe drinking water.

Fortunately, the situation is better in the Netherlands. However, this does not mean that water quality can be taken for granted. Here, too, there is a growing focus on how we protect our water sources and how we use drinking water responsibly.

Water plays a vital role in our health, our environment, and our food supply. That is why it is becoming increasingly important to be mindful of our water usage and the quality of our water sources.

The choices we make today will affect how future generations are able to manage water.

What can you do?

Contributing to better water use doesn't have to be complicated. Many small changes can add up to make a big difference.

For example:

  • Take shorter showers: Many people shower longer than necessary. A shower timer can help you be more mindful of this.
  • Shower less often: consider alternating between a shower and washing up at the sink every now and then.
  • Use a water-saving showerhead: these showerheads use less water without compromising on comfort.
  • Only use appliances when necessary: don’t run the dishwasher or washing machine until they are fully loaded.
  • Use water wisely in the garden: for example, use rainwater to water your plants.
  • Turn off the faucet while washing your hands or brushing your teeth: only let the water run when you’re actually using it.
